The combination of sea and mountains gives a special charm to this place, so that the Riviera Paklenica is an ideal place for combining mountaineering and aquatic sports.

These surroundings offer a variety of possibilities for those who want to spend their holiday actively and give free run to their adventurous and sport spirit.

The pension Michael is situated in Starigrad Paklenica surround with four national parks and we recommend to all our guests who want to see and enjoy the beautiful landscape to visit them.
   

Alpinism and sports climbing


The national park Paklenica is the most important Croatian climbing centre also known outside of Croatia and it belongs to the best in Europe because of its equipment and the quality of its climbing routes. On the climbing areas in Paklenica, there are more than 400 ordered routes of different degree of difficulty and length so that every climber can find something for himself. The main climbing season in Paklenica begins in the spring and lasts till late autumn.


Mountaineering and cycling


In the area of the national park Paklenica there are about 150 km of climbing routes and footpaths.

The most visited route is the one from the reception, through the Canyon Velika Paklenica up to the mountain hut Paklenica (about 2 hours).


Speleology


The most important characteristic of the Paklenica is the rich karst phenomena like cracks in limestone, small stone washbasins, caves and grottos.

There are more than 70 caves in the park and the most beautiful ones are Manita pec and Vodarica.


Rafting and canoeing


If you want to experience pure adrenalin, go rafting on the river Zrmanja.


Jet Ski, Parasailing


You have the possibility to rent Jet Ski boats near the pension.


Boat trip in the Velebit channel


In the centre of Starigrad you will find a wide range of boats that will take you on a trip through the Velebit channel up to the river Zrmanja.

Winnetou-the legend lives

In the 60-s of the last century, the legendary films based on the books of Karl May about the Indian chief Winnetou were shoot on several locations in Croatia.

The most attractive locations are in vicinity of the Paklenica Riviera – in the national parks Paklenica, Krka, the Plitvice lakes and the nature park Velebit (Tulove grede, Canyon of the river Zrmanja).

 

National park Paklenica

The national park Paklenica with a surface of 95 km lies between the highest peak of the Velebit Mountain (Vaganski vrh 1.758 m) and the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

The current area of the park was appointed a national park in 1949. Its most attractive characteristics are the Canyons Velika (Big) and Mala (Small) Paklenica, whose about 400 m high vertical rocks have made it a popular the destination World-wide.

More than 800 sorts of plants grow here of which about 40 endemic plants.

National park Kornati

Because of its unusual landscape, interesting geomorphology, divided coast and rich biocenosis of the sea ecosystem, the biggest part of the Kornati archipelago was appointed a national park in 1980.

National park Krka

With its seven travertine waterfalls and a total drop of 242 meters, the Krka River represents a natural and karst phenomenon. This area was appointed a national park in 1985.

The Plitvice lakes


The Plitvice lakes are the most famous national park in Croatia and it belongs to the most beautiful sights of Europe.

Because of its natural variety, this park was declared as the “World’s natural inheritance” by the UNESCO.

The Plitvice lakes enclose 16 lakes connected with each other with numerous waterfalls surrounded by a thick forest.

Zadar


Zadar – the centre of the region was founded 3000 years ago. It impresses with its architecture, museums and churches. The pension “Michael” is only 40 km far from Zadar.
